Scenic San Diego
I really could run out of words to describe San Diego – it surely is scenic, beautiful, fantastic, marvelous, paradise, heavenly and ………. well, I could go on!
Here’s a scenic San Diego – at Seaport Village
Here’s a beautiful San Diego at Seaport Village
Here’s a fantastic San Diego with a downtown city view.
Here’s a marvelous San Diego with the twin towers of the Marriott Marquis & Marina on the right.
Well, I won’t call the next two pictures paradise and heavenly as those descriptions actually fit the first two more, but those are taken up!
Now, you have a downtown tourist attraction (Seaport Village), you have a place to stay (Marriott Marquis), and now you have to go shopping!
Horton Plaza is one of the best shopping malls in the world, and undoubtedly the most colorful and most absolutely gorgeous place to shop, dine and see a movie!
All the pictures above were taken a number of years ago, and may not be as vivid as they could be. Here are some newer pictures of Horton Plaza, however, I think they are all about the same quality.
I actually saw an Indian movie here at Horton Plaza (sorry, I know this might not fit in with scenic San Diego, but I had to tie it in with Horton Plaza).
I took some more pictures of Seaport Village too recently, but I still like the older pictures that I took above.
And lastly, my favorite type of picture – the marina complete with boats, I don’t know why I like the marina so much, but I think it’s because I feel calm, peaceful and content when I see the more relaxing waters of the marina.
Also, it is worthy to note that Seaport Village is within walking distance of such big hotels as the Marriott Marquis & Marina and the Hyatt Grand Manchester (both hotels overlook Seaport Village). Horton Plaza is a nice five or ten minute walk from Seaport Village – it will probably be a good idea to walk there, however, if you are stuck for parking – Horton Plaza validates for three hours with a purchase. You could visit the movies, and get your parking ticket validated too.

Happy Diwali from San Diego
Happy Diwali from San Diego again! This time the festivities took place just outside the Shri Mandir at the annual Diwali Mela on Black Mountain Road in Mira Mesa (about 15 minutes north of downtown San Diego). The 2012 Diwali Mela in San Diego was held on Saturday, October 27th.
First, some pictures:
Incase you didn’t see my pictures of Diwali at Balboa Park in San Diego, here are three more:
Now for a video where I put a few clips together, but there are many dances that I did not capture unfortunately. I also had to cut out a lot from the dances because of background noise. In this video, first you will see a Punjabi dance – Bhangra (one of my favorites – especially since my family is from the Punjab), then you will see a dance from Rajasthan, and then another few clips. At the end of this video, you will see some little kids dancing to Kolaveri Di, which is a cute song that turned out to be very popular, and even my little Chandi sings to it whenever she hears it.
I really wanted to add some more pictures in this post of Indian sweets from a local place on Black Mountain Road, which is a great alternative to going all the way up to Artesia (about one hour and 15 minutes away from where I live). Perhaps, I will add some pictures later on – maybe even on November 13th – the actual day of Diwali. Just fyi – Black Mountain Road is San Diego’s Little India, and Artesia is Los Angeles’ Little India. I really do enjoy going up to Artesia, as there are more stores and Indian restaurants, but I am beginning to get used to our own Little India in San Diego, and love one or two of the places there, such as Ashoka The Great Restaurant, and Surati Farsan Mart (the place where I will get my Indian sweets from this year).
Here’s the video of the performances at Balboa Park in San Diego at the 5th Annual Diwali Celebration on October 21st. Here you will see dances from the many regions of India including Andhra Pradesh, Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. You will also see the Diwali Lights display towards the end of the video, and then a finale where everyone dances to Bhangra on the stage.
A new addition to this post – it is now November 12th, and I just got my sweets from Surati Farsan Fart, and here’s some pictures of the fantastic selections:
I just had to get some jalebis, these are yummy and so sweet (actually they have a lot of syrup, and have a great crunch to them)!
These two boxes have mango burfi in one box (second selection from the top left in the picture from the display selection – see above)
The second box has laddoo in them which can be seen more clearly in the picture below. Laddoo are the yellowish round balls in the first big box on the top shelf (on the left). These laddoo are absolutely delicious, and have raisins in them – they almost melt in your mouth!
I hope you like the videos, and pictures, and I hope you will celebrate in some way on November 13th – even if you light just one or two candles. Happy Diwali!
Treats From Around The World
I don’t like tricks much at all, but I certainly like treats! Today, I will share some virtual treats with you, and I hope you will enjoy them.
Treats from USA: I love chocolate, so here is a picture of a great chocolate factory that produces terrific chocolate. Enjoy!
Treats from Italy: I love tea, but can’t produce any great pictures of tea, and since I also love cappuccino, here is one for you (let’s pretend this picture was taken in Italy, but it really was taken in England). Enjoy!
Treats from England: This is a picture that was taken by my son Luca, and he won a prize for it at his school in a photography competition. I am so proud of him! I know that a lot of kids the world over will be eating this type of candy on Halloween. Enjoy!
Treats from India: Okay, so this next one….I didn’t go to India to take the picture, I took it closer to home in Artesia, CA (close to Los Angeles), but still….these are sweets of India, and they’re delicious! Enjoy!
I can’t share any more treats with you, as I think that’s enough treats for one day. Also, as I looked through my pictures, I couldn’t help but think that I should have taken more pictures of food from my travels around the world, why didn’t I take pictures of fish and chips when I lived in England, or pasta when I was in Italy, or Indian food when I was in India a long time ago, or even a picture of any type of food in Jamaica? That could be a reminder for us all – you never know when you might need those pictures or the virtual treats. Enjoy your treats everyone!
Get Into The Splendor!
Get into the Splendor – the Carnival Splendor! The Carnival Splendor is a beautiful ship, in fact it is splendid! Some quick facts: it first sailed in 2008; it holds approximately 3000 people; it has a number of swimming pools; and it has the only Indian restaurant I’ve ever seen on a ship – the Tandoor. Quite simply put: it has all the splendor you would need on a cruise vacation. I’m not going to go into all the details of the Splendor, and my cruise on it, but you can take a look at a write-up I did directly after the July, 2011 cruise – my review of the Carnival Splendor. Here are some pictures:
That’s me in the Black Pearl Dining Room
That’s me in the Lido Dining Room
If you want to stay connected while you’re on your cruise, it is an extra cost (not included unfortunately) – just go visit The Web, which is the name of the Internet Lounge.
The El Morocco Lounge is so beautiful, that I just had to include another photo
Bollywood dance lesson time, and even my little Chandi (in the pink dress) got into the groove, and she was just 20 months old at the time!
Here Chandi is with two of the UCSD Zor dancers
UCSD Zor – one of the top Bollywood dance teams in the nation entertained my group – the Bindi Group – this time with Bhangra!
We had Indian food most nights on the cruise in the Gold Pearl Dining Room, here’s a look at just one night’s dishes:
Did you know that there’s an Indian place on the Lido Deck called the Tandoor where they serve Indian food every day at lunch time? Here’s just a little of what’s on the menu:
I just have to share with you some of the wonderful food that I put on my plate from the Tandoor!
Here’s a look at some other food that was served on the Splendor:
If you want to work off all that food with a swim in the evening, this is what it looks like by the pool at night time:
Or if you want to just kick back and try your luck in the Casino
This is where your little ones will be entertained
Don’t forget, there’s always ways to have some good family time with activities such as miniature golf
Now for one last day time pool picture
If you are wondering what the address is for where you can catch your cruise at Long Beach Cruise Terminal, it’s right in this next picture:
I also recently made another video, and since my pictures are no longer on my blog at luchaniktravel.com (it got redirected to my CruiseOne website), that is why I have put some of them here, and on my video. I had spent so much time putting my pictures on my blog, but now they’re all gone. Anyway, that is why I started this blog (Why I Started A Blog In The First Place?)
Here is my newest cruise video of the Carnival Splendor:
This is different to my ship inspection video of the Carnival Splendor that I did prior to taking the July, 2011 cruise to Mexico.
I hope you like my pictures, and my videos of the Carnival Splendor. Remember, life can be full of splendor, you just have to look for it…….just get into the Splendor, and you may find what you are looking for – a wonderful vacation!
Incredible San Diego – La Jolla
I felt the need to explore today, and have just a bit of “me” time. The kids were at school, so instead of being cooped up with the computer, I figured some fresh air and reacquaintance with San Diego was on the list. I headed for La Jolla which is only about a fifteen minutes drive north from downtown San Diego.
By the way, La Jolla is not pronounced with a “J” like in jolly, rather it is pronounced “La Hoya”. Want to hear the pronunciation in Spanish? http://translate.google.com/#en/es/jolla Just click on the speaker button when the Google Translate page opens. Want to hear the pronunciation in Finnish? http://translate.google.com/#en/fi/jolla – I was inspired to add these two links, courtesy of Matti from Finland (see comment below). Thanks, Matti.
This is what I saw, and photographed with my I-Phone (not the camera of choice), but this had been a spontaneous trip, and was not planned, so I apologize if the pictures are fuzzy.
Even the sea lions love La Jolla. We have plenty of them, as well as seals, but I think these are sea lions:
Tropical San Diego
The sky seems so beautiful and blue, but all these pictures were taken on the same day, and I never touch up my pictures.
I like flowers by the ocean, so picturesque!
Want to see what yesterday morning was like? It wasn’t that nice weather-wise, it was drizzling slightly, and the skies were grey, but something spectacular appeared in the sky – a full rainbow! I have never seen such a big rainbow, I was overjoyed. Again, I only had my I-Phone, and could not capture the entire rainbow from left to right – it was way too big! Actually, this picture did not come out nice, it was nicer seeing the rainbow in person, and was a completely different experience.
This picture taken in La Jolla today seems to have a faint shadow of a rainbow, but I don’t think there was one in the sky at the time I was taking these pictures, although I did see another rainbow again earlier today, but not like yesterday’s.
The weather has turned a little cooler now in San Diego, but it’s still beautiful during the day. We finally got our morning and evening breeze back, but as always – when we have it back, we wish we had the heat back. Still, San Diego is Paradise on earth, and after seeing it again today – I think there’s no better place.
This is an addition to the post: Look at the picture I just added (below). This is La Jolla Cove, and was taken in approximately October of 1996 (before I moved to San Diego – while on holiday). I just found this picture, and compared it against Image 3088 which is picture 7 (above) – just to make sure it was La Jolla, and not one of the many other beaches around the world. You will see that it is the same place, even if the quality of the pictures is very different – this new addition was taken with an older camera, which was not a digital camera (not sure which camera – probably Olympus), and hence I scanned it onto my computer. I wonder if you notice any real changes other than image quality and color? Anyway, enjoy this “new” picture too.
Here are both pictures of La Jolla Cove closer together.
Saddened That A San Diego Man Died In Bear Attack – Denali National Park
I am so saddened upon hearing about a San Diego man who was mauled to death by a bear in Denali Park, Alaska on August 24, 2012. Richard White loved being around nature, and was intent on taking pictures, and subsequently paid for it with his own life. The story grieves me because the man is from my area (San Diego); he was relatively young – only 49, and he was married and a father to a 21 month old baby girl – who will now grow up without her father. Nobody deserves to be mauled to death, it is simply horrifying to think what Richard must have gone through.
I think the story hits close to my heart because I understand what it’s like to be fascinated with bears and what it’s like to want to take pictures of them, and get close up to them. I somehow can understand Richard White’s need to be close to the bears and to continue taking pictures, even though it was not the right choice.
This is the picture that I got by putting my camera through the bar (I certainly would not recommend doing this to anyone else) and taking the photo:
These are the pictures that you are supposed to get when you don’t put your camera through the bars – you get the fence in the picture.
When I was in the bus at Denali National Park, and saw the Grizzly Bear, I hoped and prayed that they would let us out of the bus, just so that I could get better pictures, but there’s a reason they don’t do that.
This is the picture that I got while I was in the bus:
When the bear started coming towards the bus, that must have been why the bus driver decided to take off
I realize the dangers of bears more acutely now, and somehow can’t help thinking….that could have been me. Just remember when you go to Denali, pay heed to the training, and to what the park wardens tell you. Pay attention to the signs, and better still – don’t go on your own or be thoroughly engrossed in picture taking that you forget the dangers lurking around you.
I am very sorry for what happened to Richard, and my condolences go out to all those who knew him, especially to his family, wife, baby, and his friends. May you rest in peace, Richard.
These are some articles that you can read about Richard White, the San Diego man who lost his life in Denali:

http://www.adn.com/2012/08/25/2599545/hiker-killed-by-grizzly-bear-in.html
My previous post of Wildlife Pictures Taken In Alaska can be viewed here: https://luchanik.wordpress.com/2012/06/11/wild-life-pictures-taken-in-alaska/
At 6 minutes and 22 seconds into this movie that I made and until 7 minutes and 19 seconds or so, you will see the Grizzly Bear in action in Denali Park, moving around stealthily while rummaging around, probably searching for food.
Beautiful San Diego – Some Places You’ll Want To Escape To
It has been way too hot in San Diego this year. In fact, just today, it got up to 101°F on the coast in Del Mar. This weather is definitely unusual for us. We always have a nice breeze here by the coast. Where has the breeze gone to, and when is it coming back? Powerhouse Beach in Del Mar, and the Hotel Del in Coronado are just a few perfect places to escape to.
First, a glimpse of beautiful San Diego as seen from Coronado:
Powerhouse Beach in Del Mar – this is an absolutely beautiful beach complete with children’s playground, palm trees, restaurants on the beach and much more.
What better playground than this for kids? Play in paradise, swing overlooking the ocean….it just doesn’t get any better!
Even dogs want to get in on the action at the playground.
Some people escape the heat to this place, and the words on the flag are so appropriate!
Some people still want to be active, and what better place than the beach?
You might know that the Hotel Del is my favorite place in San Diego (see my previous post on San Diego). Today, the sky was so beautiful and blue, there’s just no place like the Hotel Del.
People escape the heat, and go to the Hotel Del. Weddings take place here as well as on the beach all the time.
This beach is right in front of the Hotel Del in Coronado, and on this particular day in July – I saw two weddings on the beach and one occurring in the grounds of the Hotel Del. That place sure is popular for many!
Even though this picture was not taken at Powerhouse Beach in Del Mar or in Coronado, I just felt it was fitting to show it here – along with the other picture of the dog in this post. Dogs sure get pampered in San Diego!
So whether you have a dog that appreciates the finer things in life, or whether it’s yourself, take a visit to America’s finest city, and you will find a place that will become your piece of paradise.
Please note, this is an addition: I just had to add La Jolla Cove as a place you’d want to escape to as well, here is the link: https://luchanik.wordpress.com/2012/10/12/incredible-san-diego-la-jolla/ . Also, please take a look at one of my other posts on Beautiful San Diego: https://luchanik.wordpress.com/2012/06/10/beautiful-san-diego/
Super San Francisco
This was my second visit to San Francisco. I’m not going to write much here, but will just show you some of my pictures taken in July of 2012. Whether you visit for Fishermans Wharf, China Town, Little Italy, the Golden Gate Bridge, or whether you love chocolate and want to visit the Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory, there will be something for everyone to see here in San Francisco.
People put their underwear on display to dry in their windows (of all places).
People’s other clothes go on public display out on the balcony. Here in San Diego, we are not even allowed to put things on the balcony when we are not even overlooking a public street – San Francisco seems to be a lot more laid back with its policies.
I did not get very good pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge, unfortunately. The lighting just did not work out for me, and plus it was overcast to some degree.
near the Golden Gate Bridge, I just had to take this picture:
It was so busy here at Ghirardelli – absolutely amazing, and need I say – tasty!
I hope you liked the pictures of San Francisco. It is a beautiful city, and ever so colorful.
Lovely Lake Tahoe
South Lake Tahoe, California, is not just a winter destination for ski-lovers – it is a perfect place to go in the summer. It is serene, and offers a laid-back atmosphere, where you can spend your summer afternoons doing practically nothing other than sunbathing along the edge of the Lake. The beaches along the Lake are beautiful, and the color of the water is just gorgeous – very green. Then with the mountains, and the fresh air – this place is terrific. We visited in the middle of July, 2012, and even though it was hot, there was a nice breeze.
Bring your hiking shoes, as this is a perfect place to take walks, although be warned that going up the hills in Lake Tahoe, should only be undertaken by those who are fit enough. I once attempted to take a walk along the road leading back up to the place where we stayed – Tahoe Seasons Resort – well, going downhill was no problem, but going back up certainly was a different story – let’s just say, it was quite a challenge for me. Be warned though, that you are going to be way up in the mountains and you will see that items in the grocery store such as chips, and even milk and yoghurt will be slightly swollen with excess air. I was told that many people can suffer from swollen ankles here, but I didn’t have that problem.
Here are some pictures of Lakeside Beach – a private beach, and further down this post, you will see pictures of Emerald Lake and Tahoe Seasons Resort.
This is a restaurant that overlooks the private beach – Lakeside Beach – which we had a free pass to.
On day three, we ventured onto the narrow roads again (it takes quite a bit of courage sometimes to face those same roads again) to see Lake Emerald, which is just about a fifteen or twenty minute drive from downtown South Lake Tahoe.
This is a beach that is not private, and it is also very beautiful, and it is only a five minute drive from Lakeside Beach.
As for food, we mostly went to Denny’s, however, we did try a wonderful Indian restaurant named Nikki’s Chaat Cafe – it had the best pakoras ever! I am normally more a samosa person, but this time I was hooked! I will always remember the pakoras.
This is just a picture I took, but I didn’t get to try the food here.
This is the resort where we stayed. It actually is a timeshare that I exchanged into, and instead of staying for seven days – we stayed for just four days. The actual accommodation was quite nice. It was a one-bedroom with a separate living room, that had a mini-fridge with microwave, and coffee maker (no stove).
Chandi at Tahoe Seasons Resort – with her “Bear Family”
South Lake Tahoe is indeed a very beautiful place to visit – once you get there. However, getting there – can be a little tricky. In fact, I would be hesitant about driving on those roads in snowy conditions, as it was a little hair-raising driving to this popular, and very laid-back ski destination. As I drove the car along the narrow roads that went into mountainous community, my heart skipped many a beat and I dared not look along the sides of the road as I could easily have gone off the edge of the road in an instant.
So, my words of advice are – just be careful driving into this tourist destination, and bring some extra money – as Harrah’s Casino and Harvey’s Casino are in Lake Tahoe, in the centre of downtown.
